Introduction to Persuasive Strategies (Rhetorical Appeals)

Goals: You will be able to...
  • Identify three types of rhetorical appeals used in an audio-visual text and a written text
    • Logical appeal (logos/appeal to reasons)
    • Ethical appeal (Ethos/appeal to author's credibility)
    • Emotional appeal (Pathos/ appeals to audience's needs and values)
  • Identify specific strategies and tools used to achieve the three types of rhetorical appeals above.
Reminder about Essay Basics Draft 2
  • Cite the source EVERY TIME you mention a piece of evidence that is not from your personal experience or observation unless it is common sense (when unsure, always cite!)
    • Example 1) Creating a garden on the rooftop helps enhance the scenery.
    • Example 2) Green roof does not cause water leakage. Sedum can be easily found in China. Green roof can help improve the environment by improving the air quality.
    • Note: When you mention the same source more than once in your essay, you only need to write "Scott (2006)" in the first mention of the source. In the following mentions of the article, you can just write "Scott".
  • Re-read the essay question: “Which type of roof is more advantageous for your hometown (“white roof” or “green roof”)? What are the advantages of using one type of roof over the other in your hometown?”
  • Rubric updated (same content, just added point values for each criteria)
