Argumentative Essay (20% of final grade)
Topic: Chosen by the student; must be approved by the instructor
Type of Assignment: Source-based argumentative research paper
Task:
Students should choose a position on a debatable value or policy issue,
arguing 3 main points based on experience, expert opinion and evidence
from their sources. Skills such as incorporating/refuting the opposing
arguments, using persuasive strategies, and maintaining a professional
tone are important for this assignment.
Formatting:
Essays should be 3-4 pages, Times New Roman, Size 12, Double-spaced,
with 1-inch margins on all sides. (Paper size: 8 1/2 x 11-inches) APA-formatting should be used with a title page and include
headings and headers for the final draft.
Sources:
A minimum of 3 academic sources should be used for this assignment.
Students will not have had extensive training in source reliability,
however, you are required to use library sources and
use an academic source "checklist". You should avoid using non-academic sources such as wikipedia,
eHow, and about.com.
Plagiarism:
Both intentional and unintentional plagiarism are punished
harshly at this point of the semester. ALL A-level final drafts must be completely
free from plagiarism.
Submission: Create a folder titled "Unit 3" and submit everything there.
